Modes Of Transport

I do have to mention the modes of transportation in Vietnam. Motorbike is key around these parts. For us budget minded foreigners traveling from one place to another, we have to think about the price and comfort level to what you can bear. So far we have been on an airplane, motorcycle, taxi, buses, mini van and boat. Waiting for the right place to ride tuk tuk and elephants.

The sleeper buses are great for the long haul and you can save a night of accommodation, if you take the night bus. I actually slept pretty sound for an 11 hour ride. Buses are generally the cheapest way to travel. If you take a train, count on double the price, and flying would be more than three or four times the rate.

The berths are a wee bit tight if you are taller than me. I was a little snug. Tips given to us was not to get too far back and not near the washroom. My tip is ear plugs night shades, water, snacks and perhaps sleeping pill. Also your carry on should be small and compact, if you can lock it by the zippers, even better.

We tried our first sleeper bus with Futa Bus line and on the upper berth, it did not do so well with Terry as the motion is intensified with the winding roads.

We secured the lower berths for the Nha Trang. This other bus line Cuc Tung had poor WiFi onboard and they did not reserve your berth numbers, so you have to make sure you are in front of the pack when boarding. It was booked through the hotel, they get a two dollar commission per head, it was worth not having to lug around your gear to the depot directly as they had hotel pickup.
